A “beloved” high school student was killed in a crash Thursday morning while he was on his way to graduation practice, authorities in Martin County said.
B, 18, of Hobe Sound, was going to graduate from South Fork High School on Thursday night before tragedy struck.
B was coming up to the intersection of Pratt Whitney Road and Bulldog Way when he failed to slow for stopped traffic and slammed into the back of a dump truck, Martin County Sheriff J said
The 18-year-old was killed on impact.
“It did not look like he hit the brakes,” J said. “Clearly there was some type of distraction, but we don’t know what that is.”
The sheriff said students at South Fork High School have been “shocked” by what took place right “in front of their school.” A friend of B was one of the first people on scene after spotting the smoke from the crash.
“[The friend] ran up and saw what no one should see,” J said. “So they’re traumatized.”
In a statement Thursday, the Martin County School District called the crash “heartbreaking” and said counseling was being offered for those grieving.
“Our hearts are with everyone impacted by this tragedy, including our students, staff, and school community,” the school district wrote, in part. “Counseling support will be available for students and staff, and information will be shared directly with families.”
The sheriff also said it was “an extremely sad case,” and shared his condolences for B’s friends and family, as well as the staff at South Fork High School.
“We learned that Mr. B is a beloved student here at the school, and he’s part of their ag program, part of their shop program,” J said. “This really does highlight just how fragile life is, how quickly things change.”
The Florida Highway Patrol is leading the investigation into the crash. No further information was immediately available regarding the circumstances leading up to the incident.
