1 in custody after shooting at Orange City plaza, police say

Police said a man was shot in the back Saturday morning in an Orange City parking lot, adding the suspects then fled.

Officers responded around 10:40 a.m. to the parking lot of Ollie’s Bargain Outlet within Market Place Plaza, locating a 46-year-old man who had been shot in the lower back, the Orange City Police Department said in a statement.

It was learned the victim and suspect were strangers who were involved in a verbal altercation in the parking lot, police said.

The suspect was identified Sunday as 21-year-old J. He was arrested and taken into custody.

During the altercation, the suspected shooter — described as a Hispanic man who was riding as a passenger in a black four-door Mazda that was being driven by a White female — fired at the victim, the statement reads.

The suspects fled the area in the Mazda immediately after the shooting, police said.

The victim was taken to a hospital for treatment of injuries that were not believed to be life-threatening, according to police.
