A family of seven is out of their home after a lithium-ion battery charging for an e-bike sparked a fire in the 7500 block of Castle Drive, north of Fruitville and east of I-75.

The family is safe, but the home is unlivable.

Assistant Chief Wolfgang of the Sarasota County Fire Department said a resident heard a pop come from the bedroom and when he went to investigate, he saw smoke coming from a battery that was on charge for an e-bike.

This family is not alone. In Sarasota County, since January, crews have responded to six major fires related to lithium-ion batteries, costing a quarter million dollars in damage. These batteries are in cell phones, toothbrushes and some cars.

“As we see more and more of these products out there we are starting to see some problems and a lot of the problems can be prevented,” Wolfgang said.

Measures include preventing the batteries from overheating.

“Keeping your lithium-ion product out of the sunlight keeping them in a safe cool place outside your bedroom,” Wolfgang said.

A fire caused by a lithium-ion battery burns hotter and faster compared to others.

N, who lives close by, was shocked by the fire.

“It scared me because it used to be my nieces house,” N said. “I can’t imagine I don’t know and if I can help them I would.”

N does not leave her battery charge unattended.

“I usually put a timer on when I charge my battery, so I don’t forget to unplug it,” N said.

Wolfgang said it is important to vet all lithium battery products by looking for a seal like from Underwriters Labs.

The Red Cross has reached out to the family offering emergency financial assistance and recovery support.
