Teen, 15, riding e-scooter dies after hit-and-run crash in Brevard County, FHP says

A 15-year-old Melbourne teen riding an electric scooter was killed in a hit-and-run crash in Viera early Sunday morning, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Troopers said the crash happened just before 4 a.m. on Father’s Day near Viera Boulevard and Independence Avenue.

Investigators said a 2009 Hyundai Genesis was traveling east on Viera Boulevard east of Independence Avenue when it veered onto the outside shoulder, where the teenager was riding an electric scooter in the same direction as traffic. The right side of the vehicle hit the scooter rider, troopers say.

After the crash, FHP said the driver drove away.

The teen was taken to Arnold Palmer Hospital, where he later died from his injuries.

During the investigation, troopers say they found a passenger-side mirror at the crash scene. The mirror was identified as belonging to a black 2009-2010 Hyundai Genesis.

Investigators say they later found a vehicle matching that description about 1.5 miles south of the crash scene with damage consistent with the collision.

“Our Traffic Homicide Investigators located a possible suspect vehicle and have taken possession of it for processing,” FHP said in a statement.

The crash remains an active criminal investigation.

Anyone with information about the crash is asked to contact FHP by dialing *347 or CRIMELINE at 1-800-423-TIPS.
