A motorcyclist was arrested Wednesday after he was caught “splitting lanes” in a work zone on Interstate 75 and later crashed while trying to evade troopers, according to an arrest report.
The Florida Highway Patrol said a trooper was traveling north on I-75 at mile marker 262 when a motorcyclist was seen “splitting lanes” and passing stopped traffic.
The trooper activated the patrol car’s lights to try to pull the motorcyclist over, but the driver “continued to operate his motorcycle in a reckless manner,” an arrest report said.
The FHP said that as the trooper tried to slow the motorcyclist down in a grassy area, the driver “kept pointing as if he was going to pull over” but continued to accelerate.
The motorcyclist later lost control of the bike after he entered a grassy shoulder near the intersection of Morris Bridge Road and Davis Road. The motorcycle ended up hitting the right side of the patrol car.
The rider was arrested and taken to a hospital.
While at the hospital, investigators said they found a handgun in his backpack.
The motorcyclist was charged with reckless driving, fleeing and attempting to elude law enforcement with disregard, and possession of firearm equipment by a convicted felon.
