A family is still waiting for answers three months after a man was killed and his son was injured in a hit-and-run boat crash in Biscayne Bay.
Davide Veglia died while his 14-year-old son survived the March 25 crash, and now his wife wants to see accountability for her devastating loss.
F said her husband and son were fishing in Biscayne Bay when authorities said a 40-foot boat crashed into their dinghy and took off.
Her husband was killed while her son, Lorenzo, was left with broken bones.
She said fishing brought the two together.
“Not just a hobby, but it was a moment of connectivity they had,” F said.
Now, she’s left mourning a husband, father and friend.
“He was very caring with the people that were around him. Family, friends, the people at work,” she said.
Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission officials said the boat was found days later, but no one has been charged.
“How can we believe that the operator didn’t realize he hit the dinghy, and he killed my husband and left my son over there witnessing the death of his father. I don’t believe it,” F said.
F’s attorney said they’re aware who owns the boat and who was operating it that night.
“What we’ve seen in terms of surveillance footage and things like that, in the moments leading up to the incident, you can see the boat going at a speed that’s greater than what’s reasonable for the circumstances,” attorney R said.
“I don’t understand why people are allowed to go so fast at night in that body of water, it doesn’t make any sense,” F said.
F hopes the story prompts change for greater boating safety as she waits for answers on what has been a frustrating and painful ordeal.
“We are a little bit in the dark, I really wish I could tell my son something is moving and we could have some kind of justice,” F said.
The family said they have a meeting with the Miami-Dade State Attorney’s Office on Monday to find out where things stand.
FWC officials said the investigation is ongoing.
