A Marco Island police officer was assaulted while responding to the scene of a crash on Wednesday, according to the Marco Island Police Department.

MIPD says that at around 10:48 p.m. officers responded to a single-vehicle crash in the area of Cape Marco Drive and South Collier Boulevard. Officers say that during the investigation of the crash, they determined that the car veered off the road and hit multiple trees and a wall.

Officers say they tried to assist the driver of the car, who became combative and ended up assaulting a Marco Island police officer. MIPD says the driver was B, 42, from North Carolina.

B was arrested and charged with battery on a law enforcement officer.

MIPD says the officer did not sustain any serious injuries, and that the crash remains under investigation.
