Hundreds mourn teen killed in Brevard hit-and-run as family calls for justice

Hundreds of mourners gathered at a Palm Bay church for a celebration of life in honor of a Brevard County teen who was killed last month when he was hit on an electric scooter.

Now, his family is renewing calls for justice in his death and encouraging the public about organ donation and making sure to get a physical ID.

The Florida Highway Patrol said a driver has not yet been identified, but a suspect car has been taken in and processed.

D, I’s aunt and legal guardian, said his family is still deep in grief.

“We’ll forever be broken,” she said. “I don’t wish that and this on anybody.”

Family, friends and neighbors came out to the church wearing I’s favorite colors, yellow and purple, and carrying sunflowers.

“He had a bright future,” D said. “He wanted to be in the NBA and play basketball or maybe become a U.S. Navy pilot and fly the F35 Lightning and I was his biggest cheerleader to see him through, to push him to college. That’s all taken away.”

His aunt said her nephew’s organs — both kidneys, heart valves, and liver — went to save four lives after his death.

She said she had just taken him to get his ID.

“A lot of us are smiling through that, that another person can live due to these circumstances,” she said. “We’re celebrating his life and he’s living on with providing these organs to other people so they can live.”

Now, she’s encouraging parents of other teens to get an ID to help responders quickly identify them in case of an emergency.

“That’s definitely something we can educate people, spread the word and we can help others in need in case of a tragedy like ours.”
