Opa-locka woman dies 4 days after driver struck her while walking with her dog

Opa-locka woman dies 4 days after driver struck her while walking with her dog

H, died on Friday in the hospital about four days after a driver struck her during an early morning walk with her dog in northwestern Miami-Dade County.

Relatives said the 75-year-old matriarch, who was independent, suffered a head injury and bone fractures when the driver struck her as she walked to a store near her apartment in Opa-locka.

“Her bones were broken from her legs all the way up to her neck,” said H’s daughter-in-law H.

Shortly after 2:25 a.m., on July 6, a dispatcher reported a driver had struck the grandmother as she walked northbound on Northwest 27th Avenue near Sesame Street and Sharazad Boulevard.

Miami-Dade Fire Rescue personnel responded to 14471 NW 27th Ave. and took A H to Jackson Memorial Hospital’s Ryder Trauma Center, where doctors tried to save her.

“We are devastated,” H said. “We are hurt; we are heartbroken.”

A H’s neighbors said drivers often speed on Northwest 27th Avenue, and there have been other pedestrians fatally struck in the area.

H said she and her family had a message for the driver who struck her: “Why? Because if you slow down, no matter what time you are driving, there are still people out there that you have to look out for.”

The driver remained at the scene of the crash and cooperated with police officers, according to the Opa-locka Police Department. Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office deputies with the traffic homicide unit were investigating the cause of the crash.

Opa-locka Commissioner L said he is committed to making sure measures are taken to make Northwest 27 Avenue safer for pedestrians.
