Quick-thinking neighbors helped rescue a man from a burning house on Sunday morning.
Firefighters said the man was seriously injured and airlifted as a trauma alert. It happened on Sabal Way in Leesburg just before 10 a.m.
W lives across the street and said he noticed the smoke looking out his front windows. He and his wife called 911.
“I knew I had to get over there,” W said. “At one moment you could see the front door and another moment you couldn’t see the front door because the smoke just shifting around.”
W said his neighbor lives alone and uses a wheelchair. That’s why he rushed over to help. After searching around the home, W said he noticed his neighbor close to the door.
“My neighbor was on the ground unconscious, and I couldn’t tell his condition,” he said. “I immediately tried to drag him away from the house, and I was able to drag him a little ways.”
Others joined in to help until Lake County Fire and Rescue and the Leesburg Fire Department arrived.
WESH 2 is working to learn more about what started the fire and how the victim is doing.
The state fire marshal has been notified and is investigating.
