A Jacksonville man riding an electric bicycle was struck by a pickup truck while crossing in a designated crosswalk Thursday afternoon, sending him to the hospital.

The crash occurred at approximately 4:45 p.m. on July 23, at the intersection of Anniston Road and Beach Boulevard, according to a crash report filed by the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office.

According to the report, the driver of a 2008 Nissan Titan pickup truck was traveling southbound on Anniston Road in the outside lane, attempting to make a right turn westbound onto Beach Boulevard. At the same time, a man was riding his electric bicycle eastbound through the designated crosswalk at the intersection.

The investigating officer said the front of the truck struck the left side of the electric bicycle while it was still inside the crosswalk.

The bicyclist told the officer he was crossing eastbound through the crosswalk when the truck moved forward and hit the left side of his bicycle. The driver told the officer he had been traveling southbound in the outside lane when the collision occurred, and that when he turned right, he believed the traffic signal was red.

The bicyclist was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash. He was transported to the hospital by Jacksonville Fire and Rescue.

The officer noted minor damage to the front of the pickup truck and to the left side of the bicycle.

Following the investigation, the driver was found to be in violation of Florida law and was issued a citation for failure to use due care toward a pedestrian
