A 53-year-old DeLand man’s sister was taken into custody after the man was stabbed in the chest early Tuesday, according to police.

Officers responded to the scene around 5 a.m. in the Villa Villar neighborhood, the DeLand Police Department said in a statement.

The victim suffered a single stab wound to the chest and made it to an area hospital by around 5:50 a.m., where he was in critical condition at last check, the statement reads.

The suspect — identified as the man’s sister, who was serving as an in-home caretaker for three people in the residence — was taken into custody, police said. No additional victims had been reported at the time of this writing.

An investigation is said to be active and ongoing. Anyone with further information is asked to contact DeLand police at 386-626-7400.
