Man stabbed his 12-year-old cousin in Sunrise after arguing over gaming console, police say

An argument over a gaming console ended with a 28-year-old man stabbing his 12-year-old cousin in the hip area in Sunrise, authorities said.

According to an arrest report obtained Monday by Local 10 News, Z, of Weston, was arrested early Friday morning on a charge of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon.

Sunrise police said the stabbing occurred Thursday night at an apartment complex in the 12800 block of Vista Isles Drive.

When officers arrived at the scene, they spoke with the great-grandmother of the suspect and victim, who said that the two had been arguing over a gaming console and she “immediately intervened to separate them,” the arrest report stated.

According to the report, the great-grandmother did not see a knife being displayed during the argument.

The woman told police that soon after the altercation she saw Z leaving the apartment and immediately followed him outside “out of curiosity.”

According to the report, she said the victim then approached her and said that Z had just stabbed him in the right hip area with a knife.

Police said the victim was transported to Broward Health Medical Center to be treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

According to the report, detectives later spoke with the victim at the hospital, and he said he got into a “heated argument” with his cousin after Z used his gaming console without permission.

The victim said Z pushed him, at which time his great-grandmother intervened and separated them.

Police said the victim admitted to removing a knife from the knife storage block in the kitchen after the argument erupted, but said he immediately returned it to the storage block after his great-grandmother intervened.

According to the report, the victim said Z then pulled out a knife from behind the TV and stabbed him as the victim was walking toward his gaming console to retrieve it.

Police said the victim’s stab wound measured about 1 centimeter in depth.

As of Monday morning, Z was being held at the Broward County Main Jail on a $20,000 bond.
