A 48-year-old Vero Beach man riding an electric bicycle was killed after being struck by a pickup truck that fled the scene Sunday night in unincorporated Indian River County.
According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the crash happened around 8:57 p.m. Sunday at the intersection of 8th Street and 14th Avenue.
FHP said the bicyclist was traveling west in the westbound lane of 8th Street and approaching 14th Avenue.
A light-colored Ford F-150, believed to be a 2015 to 2020 model, was traveling behind him in the same lane, investigators said.
As the pickup approached the bicyclist, the driver took evasive action, traveling southwest and partially entering the eastbound lane. However, troopers said the truck was unable to avoid the bicyclist, and the right side of the pickup struck him.
The bicyclist tumbled onto the roadway and came to rest in the eastbound lane of 8th Street.
FHP said the driver fled the scene without rendering aid or contacting law enforcement.
Investigators said the Ford F-150 is believed to be missing its right-side rearview mirror as a result of the crash.
The bicyclist was taken to Lawnwood Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. His identity has not been released pending notification of next of kin.
Both eastbound and westbound lanes of 8th Street were blocked while troopers investigated the crash.
