Firefighters with Charlotte County Fire & EMS, with assistance from the Englewood Area Fire Control District, battled a residential structure fire that sparked on Knight Island in Charlotte County.
According to officials, firefighters were dispatched at 1:04 p.m. on Saturday. The fire sparked on Kettle Harbor Drive.
Two people refused transfer to the hospital. One Englewood firefighter suffered a minor injury and was transported to the hospital. He was later discharged.
Two cats were in the residence at the time of the fire, and one of them was able to be removed safely. The other cat died.
“It was very upsetting to see that because especially when you’ve been through hurricanes and stuff and, you know, destruction and how devastating it is,” said T, a neighbor. “So when you see someone’s house being burnt down, and it was by that time it was totally engulfed in flames. And so it was really hard to see.”
Crews say that the fire caused extensive damage, with portions of the roof and multiple sides of the home collapsing. The remaining structure was too unstable for firefighters to safely access.
From the Palm Harbor dock, another neighbor, W, a former firefighter, observed the scene.
“There is no structure left. And it was a very, very, very hot fire, from the beginning. I don’t believe they could make access into the structure, but they tried, and they did a great job,” W said.
Charlotte County crews and the State Fire Marshal’s Office investigated the fire, however the instability of the structure and extensive damage prevented them from finding out the cause of the fire.
