A teenage girl was arrested early Sunday morning after troopers said she crashed her mother’s vehicle while fleeing law enforcement.
According to a Florida Highway Patrol arrest report, the incident occurred at 6:36 a.m. on U.S. Highway 19 in Holiday.
While traveling southbound, a trooper spotted a red GMC Acadia switch to the center lane and begin increasing its speed, traveling 60 mph in a 45-mph zone.
The trooper initiated a traffic stop, and the Acadia pulled into a nearby McDonald’s parking lot.
The driver, a 16-year-old girl, told the trooper that she did not have a driver’s license, only a driver’s permit out of “Maine or Massachusetts,” arrest papers said.
The girl claimed that she was in a rush to get to a friend’s house to get medication for her brother, who critically needed it. She also said her mother allowed her to take the vehicle.
As the trooper returned to his patrol car to enter the girl’s name on the traffic stop call, she fled the parking lot and onto westbound Camry Drive, and a brief pursuit ensued.
As the pursuit approached the intersection of Gulf Trace Boulevard, the driver lost control of the GMC and crashed into a curb and a cable box.
The vehicle became disabled, and the teenager was ordered out of the GMC and detained.
Pasco County deputies went to the girl’s home and spoke with her mother, who said she did not give her daughter permission to take the GMC. She then permitted law enforcement to read her daughter her rights.
The girl was arrested for fleeing to elude law enforcement, and cited for speeding, driving with a permit with no licensed driver 21 or older, and careless driving.
