A Leesburg teen will appear in court after allegedly shaking a fellow Beacon College student who did not want to talk about politics.
An officer responded to a student-on-student battery involving 18-year-old C at Beacon College, 105 E Main St., around 8 p.m. Monday, Aug. 24, according to a case report from the Leesburg Police Department.
Upon arrival, the officer was flagged down by two people standing in front of the college. One of them was the other student involved in the battery, and the other was the witness, the report said.
The student advised that C came up to him while in the City Hall area and tried to start talking about politics. He stated he did not want to talk about that and started to walk southbound toward Main Street. C followed him until he crossed the road near the college, the report said.
He proceeded to grab the student by the shoulders and violently shook him. He would not let go when the student tried to get away, so the witness got between them to break it up. The student then reported the incident to the resident director, who told him to go to campus security and call the police, the report said.
The officer also spoke with the witness and learned that he and the student had initially been sitting under a gazebo near Veterans Memorial Park when C approached them. He wanted to talk about politics and the current president, and they walked away. He subsequently attacked the student by grabbing and shaking his shoulders, the report said.
Law enforcement was ultimately directed to C’s building on the college’s campus. He knew why the officer was there, explaining that the student was messing with him by walking away near City Hall. He knew it was wrong when he grabbed the student, but he did not like how the student was walking away from him, the report said.
C was ultimately issued a misdemeanor citation for simple battery. The Massachusetts native is due to appear in court on Sept. 9.
