Wrong-way driver on I-75 facing DUI, other charges after crashing into pick-up truck in Alachua County: FHP

A 19-year-old from Orlando is facing multiple charges, including DUI and driving on the wrong side of a divided highway, after a crash on I-75, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

Troopers said they had received reports of a wrong-way driver on I-75 northbound early Monday morning, and a BOLO was issued for the 2011 Volkswagen Jetta.

They said they found it after it crashed with a 2018 Dodge Ram just before 2:30 a.m. near State Road 26.

Thankfully, no one was hurt.

Troopers said the crash was captured on dash cam from the pick-up truck, which showed the wrong-way driver heading south on the northbound side of the highway and weaving across multiple lanes.

The pick-up driver, who was in the center lane on the northbound side, swerved to avoid the wrong-way driver, but the front right of the Jetta hit the right rear of the Dodge Ram, troopers said.

The impact sent the Ram spinning across the State Road 26 off-ramp, where it stopped, blocking part of the road.

Troopers said the 19-year-old, identified as G, gave two breath samples, which registered at .190 and .176, and he was then charged with the following:

  • 316.090(1): Driving on Wrong Side of Divided Highway
  • 316.193(4): DUI – Alcohol .150 or Higher
  • 322.212(5)(b): Unauthorized Use/Possession of an Altered Driver License or ID Card
  • 316.193(3)(c)1: DUI – Property Damage/Personal Injury
