A man was fatally shot Wednesday over a fight during a basketball game at a park on Moncrief Road, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office.
The suspected shooter has been taken into custody, JSO said.
Police said they responded just before 6 p.m. Wednesday to a reported shooting on Moncrief Road north of Golfair Boulevard near the Clanzel Brown Community Center.
When officers arrived, they found a man suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Jacksonville Fire and Rescue took the man to a hospital, where he died.
JSO says multiple witnesses were detained at the scene. A suspect was also identified, found and taken into custody a short distance away from the scene, investigators said.
Police say they learned a group at Clanzel T. Brown Park was playing basketball when the man and suspect began arguing. The suspect then pulled out a firearm and shot the man before leaving the scene on foot.
This comes just months after a 12-year-old was shot in the leg in July at the same park, also over an argument between two groups.
JSO detectives, the Homicide Unit and Crime Scene Unit are collecting evidence, interviewing witnesses and investigating the circumstances that led up to the shooting on Wednesday.
