A fight over who would sit in the front passenger seat ended in gunfire outside a Spring Hill bar, Hernando County Sheriff Al Nienhuis said Tuesday.
Just before midnight, Hernando deputies said they were called to investigate a shooting at the Jigger bar early Tuesday.
According to Nienhuis, a woman and two men went to the bar on Monday night.
“You can’t make this stuff up — the two males got into a fight because the female was driving and they were fighting over who was going to sit in the front seat,” Nienhuis said.
The sheriff said the fight became “very, very heated.” One man grabbed a gun and shot at the other man, but the shot missed.
The sheriff’s office said the man who was shot at left the scene.
Nienhuis said deputies searched for the man who was reportedly shot at but were not able to find him at first.
While deputies were working the investigation, Nienhuis said the victim in the case messaged the shooter saying that he shot him.
“We spent a tremendous amount of resources trying to look for this individual to make sure that that person was OK, and try to figure out exactly what happened,” Nienhuis said.
When they tracked down the man, he reportedly told them that he was not actually shot and was not hurt.
The sheriff’s office talked to the shooter again, who claimed he fired in self-defense.
Nienhuis said neither man wanted to press charges.
“We’re gonna talk to the State Attorney to see if we have any charges in this situation, but this is just an example of, you just can’t make this stuff up. We spent thousands of dollars trying to find this supposed victim, and it was all over where they were gonna sit in the car on the ride home,” Nienhuis said.
No other information was immediately available.
