Woman arrested in Coral Gables hit-and-run that injured driver, police say

A woman accused of running a red light, crashing into another vehicle and fleeing the scene with two children was arrested Wednesday, more than a month after the collision in Coral Gables, authorities said.

The Coral Gables Police Department identified the suspect in an arrest report as S.

According to the arrest report, the crash happened Sept. 5 at approximately 2:09 p.m. near the intersection of Valencia Street and Segovia Street.

Investigators said S, 41, of Miami, was driving a gray Audi Q5 westbound on Valencia Street with two minors inside the SUV when she approached the intersection.

Surveillance video showed the Audi running a red light and crashing into another vehicle, according to police.

Following the collision, S allegedly got out of the SUV and fled on foot with the two children, leaving the vehicle behind.

Police said investigators used surveillance footage, witness statements, cellphone-related records and evidence recovered from the vehicle to identify S as the driver of the Audi.

Among the evidence was a pawn shop receipt left inside the SUV, which investigators said helped them locate her address. Police later confirmed the information through investigative databases, the report stated.

Victim continues to recover from injuries

According to the arrest report, the driver of the other vehicle suffered multiple injuries, including damage to her knee ligaments and spine.

During a follow-up conversation with investigators on Wednesday, the victim said she was still experiencing pain from her knee injuries and a dislocated or herniated spinal disc.

Police said the woman reported undergoing multiple medical appointments and procedures to manage her injuries, with additional treatment expected as doctors determine a long-term plan.

Suspect arrested more than a month later

At approximately 7:56 a.m. Wednesday, Coral Gables detectives conducting surveillance near S home spotted her leaving her apartment and entering a silver Toyota Corolla, according to the report.

Investigators approached the vehicle and made contact with her.

Police said S verbally identified herself, and officers also confirmed her identity using mail she had just retrieved bearing her full name.

She was arrested at the scene and taken to Coral Gables Police Department headquarters for questioning.

According to the report,S was advised of her Miranda rights and requested an attorney.

She was subsequently transported to the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center where she was booked on a charge of leaving the scene of a crash resulting in serious bodily injury.

As of Thursday morning, the Nicaraguan national remained at TGK on the charge as well as on an immigration hold.
