A Cape Coral man was arrested Saturday for a DUI hit-and-run crash on Coronado Parkway that caused approximately $3,000 in property damage.

According to the Cape Coral Police Department, a witness told officers she was awoken by a loud noise that sounded like a crash. When she went outside, a car with major damage was in a nearby parking lot. She said a man, later identified as Aaron Olmstead, was standing by the driver’s side door and appeared to be impaired.

The witness said that when police arrived, Olmstead, 28, ran from the scene.

Minutes before the crash, another police officer said he saw a vehicle speed past two stop signs before reaching Coronado Parkway.

Officers arrived at the scene around 1:45 a.m. and located Olmstead walking on the sidewalk of Coronado Parkway and SE 43rd Street. Police say he had slurred speech, bloodshot, watery eyes and a strong odor of alcohol on his breath.

Tire tracks on the median of Coronado Parkway matched where Olmstead’s vehicle reportedly went off the road and hit a curb before damaging grass, landscaping and median irrigation pipes.

Police began a DUI investigation, and Olmstead’s breath samples revealed a BAC of .163 and .152.

Olmstead faces charges of DUI, DUI with property damage and hit and run. He was also cited for careless driving and not wearing his seatbelt.
