Port Charlotte man accused of shooting, killing a woman inside his home

A Port Charlotte man was arrested after being accused of shooting and killing a woman inside his home on Saturday morning.

The Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office responded to a home on McDill Drive around 3:30 a.m. after receiving reports that a man, later identified as JM, 67, had just shot a woman inside following a domestic argument.

When deputies arrived, they said M was in the master bedroom with the victim and a witness.

According to the press release, M and the witness were both detained and separated. The victim, who CCSO said was shot in the chest once, was pronounced dead on the scene.

During questioning, both M and the witness reportedly provided similar statements.

According to CCSO, the victim left the house in the afternoon on Friday and came home around 2 a.m. on Saturday.

The press release said the victim was being loud, making noises, slamming doors and keeping the other residents awake.

Mogro reportedly addressed the victim and told her to be quiet, but the victim didn’t listen. Deputies said M then went to his bedroom, where he closed and locked the door because he did not feel safe based on how the victim was acting.

Deputies said approximately 20 minutes later, there was a loud banging on the master bedroom door.

Due to the loud banging, M armed himself with a gun and went to the bedroom door. As he opened the door, he was reportedly confronted by the victim, who was swinging her arms and approaching him quickly.

CCSO said it was at that time that M fired his gun, striking the victim in the chest.

“While the investigation is still active, I want to express my condolences to the family, friends, and loved ones of the victim. This is a terrible situation and will certainly have an impact far beyond the residence on McDill Drive. I pray for peace for everyone involved and for our community,” Sheriff BP said.

According to the press release, M was arrested on a charge of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon.

CCSO said charges may be added or modified as the investigation continues.
