A motorcycle driver was killed in Lakeland after a collision with a FedEx truck Monday afternoon, according to a social media post from the Polk County Sheriff’s Office.
The crash happened at Tom Costine Road near Ridgeglen Circle West around 4:30 p.m., deputies said.
The motorcyclist, 28-year-old BB, was unresponsive when first responders arrived at the scene and later died once he was taken to the hospital, the post stated.
The incident happened when a FedEx truck was traveling east on Tom Costine Road. B, on a 20023 Honda motorcycle, was driving behind the truck at a high speed, according to evidence and witness statements given to deputies.
When the FedEx truck tried to make a left turn, the motorcycle also began passing it on the left on a double yellow line (a no-passing zone). Deputies said the motorcycle hit the truck’s rear-passenger side of the truck.
The truck driver has been identified as 35-year-old JCR. He was not injured in the crash and cooperated with the investigation, deputies said.
Tom Costine Road was closed for three hours at the time of the investigation, according to the post.
An investigation is ongoing and no charges are anticipated at this time, the sheriff’s office said.
