 A 21-year-old passenger died and the driver was seriously injured after striking a concrete pole off a road in St. Johns County Saturday morning according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Officials said at 2:35 a.m., a car driving east on County Road 16A left the roadway and went onto the left shoulder for unknown reasons.

FHP said it traveled along a ditch embankment causing the passenger side of the car to strike a concrete power pole.

The passenger died at the scene and the driver was taken to the hospital with serious injuries.
