71-year-old man pursues, attacks SUV with 6 kids in road-rage fit, Daytona Beach police say

A Daytona Beach man was arrested on Wednesday evening after a bout of road rage involving another family’s SUV, according to the police department.

In an affidavit, police said that they were called to the area of South Ridgewood Avenue and Wilder Avenue after receiving a report about someone beating on the vehicle.

The affidavit is heavily redacted, though police said they made contact with a woman who had been driving her SUV in the area that day.

However, the woman told police that she encountered a driver near Beville Road and Interstate 95, and the driver began tailgating her as they both headed east, the affidavit notes.

That driver — later identified as KM, 71 — followed her to South Ridgewood Avenue, pulled in front of her SUV, and stopped, police explained.

“Due to traffic congestion, (she) was unable to move away quickly,” the affidavit reads. “(She) reported that (M) exited his vehicle and approached her SUV, hitting it with his hands, yelling obscenities, and spitting at her front-seat passenger.”

Afraid for her safety, the woman managed to speed away along Wilder Boulevard in an attempt to escape, but not being familiar with the area, she turned into the parking lot near the Daytona Beach Golf Club to get help, police said.

But according to investigators, M rammed the woman’s SUV from behind before reversing and striking her driver’s side.

“(The woman) stated she was in fear for her safety and the safety of the eight other occupants, which included three adults and six children,” the affidavit continues. “(M) then fled the scene at a high rate of speed.”

Investigators said the woman complained about back pain after the SUV was struck, and the crash caused around $5,000 worth of damage to her vehicle.

As a result of the incident, M was ultimately arrested, with officers finding a BB gun in his car after he was taken into custody, the affidavit says.

M now faces nine counts of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon and six counts of child abuse. He is held on bond of $150,000.
