A West Palm Beach police officer was injured in a hit-and-run crash. Days later, police continue to search for the culprit.
The West Palm Beach Police Department (WPBPD) said the collision occurred on Friday evening near 1900 Palm Beach Lakes Boulevard, west of I-95.
Officers were responding to a separate crash and had activated their emergency lights when the incident took place. Police said as the officer was entering his marked patrol car, a white SUV — believed to be a 2022-2024 white Hyundai Tucson — struck the vehicle around 8:30 p.m., throwing the officer to the ground.
The driver of the SUV reversed and fled the scene, heading northbound on I-95, police reported. The injured officer was taken to a local hospital for treatment.
This incident highlights the severe consequences of leaving the scene of a crash.
“I’ve seen a personal increase in hit-and-runs, especially with bicyclists, pedestrians, and people on scooters. Statistics show that 25% of all accidents in Florida are hit-and-runs, which is a very high number,” Devon Workman, a South Florida personal injury attorney, told CBS12 News.
Over the past decade, hit-and-run crashes in Florida have surged, with more than a million incidents reported, according to state data. The Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FLHSMV) launched its Stay at the Scene campaign to educate drivers. Florida law classifies leaving the scene of a crash involving injury as a second- to third-degree felony.
“It’s actually a higher penalty for leaving when you cause property damage or injury. It becomes a criminal offense versus a traffic citation. If you cause an accident, it’s a mistake. Stay at the scene, care about the people involved, and don’t make it worse for yourself or others,” Workman further explained.
The investigation into the recent hit-and-run is ongoing, WPBPD said.
