Two people had to be taken to the hospital after witnesses said a fire pit exploded at an apartment complex at 376 Penley Lake Circle.
According to the Cape Coral Fire Department, the incident happened at approximately 6 p.m. on Tuesday.
Fire officials said two people suffered non-critical injuries and were transported to the hospital with first- and second-degree burns.
Firefighters believe there was an issue with the fire pit when the people injured tried to light it. CCFD said the gas to the fire pit was shut off, and the area around it was taped off.
According to CCFD, a code case was created for fire prevention to investigate the fire pit and follow up on repairs.
Witnesses told CCFD they never saw any fire, and they only heard an explosion.
