The Lee County Sheriff’s Office and Lehigh Acres Fire Control and Rescue District responded to a crash on Moore Avenue and Sentinela Boulevard.
Law enforcement responded to the crash at around 4 a.m. on Thursday. They found fire damage to the front of a red SUV and nearby trees.
WINK News reporter Sommer Senne was deployed to the scene to gather information regarding the crash.
The driver’s father spoke with WINK News, saying that his son was driving on Moore Avenue when he encountered an animal running across the roadway.
The father said his son diverted his SUV from the animal to avoid a collision. However, he crashed into a tree, which caused the vehicle to catch fire.
No other people were inside the vehicle.
The driver then kicked open the front driver’s side door to escape the igniting vehicle. According to the father, his son’s cellphone then called law enforcement via its safety protocol.
Law enforcement then arrived at the scene soon after.
The father said that his son sustained minor injuries but was otherwise safe.
The crash remains under investigation by officials.
