Former Gainesville Walmart employee shoots man in store, turns himself in

GAINESVILLE, Fla. (WCJB) – TV20 has confirmed the gunman who opened fire at a Walmart store in Gainesville was a former employee.

According to the arrest report, Drevon Parker, 26, got into an argument with another man inside the Walmart at Butler Plaza at around 10 p.m. Wednesday.

The two men, along with the victim’s wife and children, went to the back employee-only section of the store. Witnesses say the victim punched Parker in the face. He then pulled out a pistol and shot the victim multiple times.

The victim was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Officers say Parker got in his car and briefly left the store before returning. An officer detained him and searched him for weapons. The officer didn’t know Parker was the gunman and let him go.

Later, Parker turned himself in at the Gainesville Police Department. He was booked into jail on the charge of first-degree attempted murder.

One customer who was in the store during the shooting said it was crazy inside the store.

“We just saw everything flying like food and shoes and purses and carts and everything else and people just trying to run out the door and it was, it was just very crazy” said Makenzie Mott.

Walmart officials say they have a police officer stationed at the store following the shooting.
