A car crashed into the water at the end of Oleander Street in St. James City Saturday morning around 1 a.m.

Raymond Smith, who lives nearby, saw the whole thing happen from his balcony.

“I had noticed I had heard something like a rev noise, so I just looked outside and about probably about 30ft from the water, I noticed they had just hit the brakes,” Smith said. “I stepped out on the balcony, and I heard them hydroplaning across the water.”

He said the car was speeding down Oleander Street, past the Waterfront Restaurant and Marina, past the Southernmost Inn, through a red-shaped diamond sign which indicates the road is ending, and into the water.

“I actually honestly laughed a little bit,” Smith said. “I’m not going to lie to you because people that coming down this road have been speeding nonstop.”

The Lee County Sheriff’s Office confirmed the driver is OK and had help from a passing boat who brought them to shore. Spectators watched as James Towing and Recovery towed the car out of the water.

LCSO said no one was arrested for this.
