A wrong-way head-on crash late Thursday night on Highway 27 resulted in the deaths of both drivers.
That crash happened around 10 p.m. in the southbound lane in unincorporated Frostproof, the Polk County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release.
According to evidence collected at the scene and a witness, a 2021 black Toyota Corolla was heading north in the left southbound lane while a red Nissan Altima was heading south in the left southbound lane.
“The two vehicles collided in a head-on crash, and the Toyota immediately caught fire,” deputies said in the release.
The driver of that car, a 41-year-old Sebring woman, was declared dead at the scene. Meanwhile, the driver of the Nissan, a 32-year-old Kissimmee man, was ejected from his car and declared dead soon after. His passenger, a 31-year-old woman who deputies say was either his spouse or girlfriend, suffered critical injuries in the crash.
That woman was airlifted as a trauma alert to a local hospital, where deputies say she remains in critical but stable condition.
“A 911 call was received at the same time as the crash occurred, reporting a car traveling the wrong way (north in the southbound lanes) at a high rate of speed on US 27 in that area,” deputies said.
