A Brevard County woman says she and her dog were attacked while walking on the beach.
They’re both recovering.
AS of Melbourne and her dog DR were walking on Canova Beach Friday night in Indialantic, which is a dog friendly beach. Dogs are allowed on the beach from dusk to dawn but must be kept on a leash. She said D was on one at the time of the attack.
S explained that Dusty was on a leash attached to a harness she was wearing at the time.
“So he can only be six feet away from me,” S said.
S said she saw a man walking with two Great Danes, neither of which appeared to be on a leash. “All of sudden one of his Danes ran up to us and the guy didn’t try to grab him or stop him or anything,” she recounted.
S said she put her hand out to try to create space between the Great Dane and her. “And he started to attack and then D put himself in between me and the that point I was just screaming, get your dog, get your dog over and over,” she said.
She says she has deep cuts on her arm and hand but thankfully nothing was broken. D was attacked on his head and face.
S said, “the dog just continued to attack and so the guy could have grabbed his dog anytime.” She contacted authorities after the attack.
The Brevard County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the incident.
S says the man just left her on the beach bleeding. She doesn’t want anything to happen to his dogs, adding it’s not their fault.
She blames the dog’s owner, who she contends should have been more responsible.
Monday evening, the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office told WESH 2 that the man had been identified and located but did not say whether he is facing any fines or citations at this time.
