A hazmat call in Gulf Breeze Thursday morning resulted in a shelter-in-place order for a number of streets near Gulf Breeze Parkway.
Fire crews put out a small fire caused by a hydrogen peroxide spill. It created some anxious moments — as well as some evacuations — for residents in the area.
“Yes sir, I’m over here off of Highway 98 and we’re filling up some peroxide and it overflowed,” you can hear on a 911 call. “It looks like it’s starting a fire.”
A 2,500 gallon tanker truck was offloading hydrogen peroxide.
Midway Fire was among the first to respond to the scene.
Fire Chief Shannon Stone reports between 80-100 gallons of the chemical spilled from the truck.
The incident quickly took a turn.
“That particular chemical, when it hits the atmosphere, an organic material like that, it actually catches fire,” Stone said. “It created a small brush fire — about 50 by 100 feet brush fire.”
The fire started to spread towards a nearby backyard. Stone says it became all hands on deck once the fire was under control.
“Our battalion chiefs immediately called for additional resources out of Escambia County,” Stone said. “They have a hazmat team, so we had them come out very quickly to help mitigate it.”
Authorities say a reverse 911 call was sent out to residents near the spill.
Two homes were evacuated and the surrounding neighborhoods were under a temporary shelter-in-place.
Susan Spencer lives just a few houses away from where the spill happened. She says she got a call from her home phone but not on her cell.
“Most people don’t have a home phone, most people have a cell phone,” Spencer said. “I don’t know why it doesn’t go to that.”
Spencer says she’s worried she would have missed the alert had it been the middle of the night.
Other residents in the area say they only received a text message from Santa Rosa County Emergency Management.
First responders got the spill and the fire under control in less than an hour.
No injuries have been reported.
