A Florida Man Killed His Teen Girlfriend. He Claims He Was ‘Lost’ in the Woods for 17 Days Before Turning Himself in, Deputies Say

A21-year-old Florida man was charged with murder after authorities believe he shot his teen girlfriend and hid from police for several weeks.

Saul Garcia Macias allegedly killed 17-year-old Sofia Lugo. She was found dead in her boyfriend’s family home in Ocala just before 1 a.m. on Dec. 10, per the Marion County Sheriff’s Office. The couple had been dating for about a month, but had known each other for over a decade, per The Miami Herald.

Lugo was found in a pool of blood with a gunshot wound to her throat, according to a probable cause affidavit obtained by the outlet. Police believe she had been shot at close range. She also had a “Saul” tattoo for her boyfriend.

Macia’s mother told police that her son awoke in the middle of the night when masked men allegedly broke into their home and shot his girlfriend. The mother claimed she was going to call 911 however, her son asked her not to call authorities before he fled the scene, deputies told the outlet.

Before Macia left he allegedly told his mother he had “done something” to his girlfriend, according to witnesses. Police began searching for the 21-year-old, urging him to turn himself in.

Law enforcement began looking for Garcia Macias, urging the 21-year-old to turn himself in and asking for the community’s help locating him. Over two weeks after Lugo died, Macias contacted detectives from a Circle K convenience store in a nearby city. He reportedly told police he had been lost in the woods for 17 days and heard police were looking for him but didn’t know why.

According to the outlet, when Macias went to the police station for his initial interview, he waved his Miranda rights and told police but told police that the night Lugos was killed, people were coming over to drop off drugs, and they killed Lygo while he was in the bathroom.

However, upon further investigation, police found that two individuals planned to drop off tattooing equipment to Lugo, but left because she wasn’t responding.

After speaking with Macias, deputies arrested him and charged him with second-degree murder. He’s currently being held without bond as authorities feared he would try to flee the country.
