A man who was allegedly drunk behind the wheel is accused of traveling at a high rate of speed on a Florida highway and striking three cars.
On Saturday night, deputies from the Lee County Sheriff’s Office (LCSO) responded to a four-vehicle crash at the intersection of State Route 82 and Gunner Road in Lehigh Acres.
During the investigation, deputies found that three vehicles were stopped at a red light when a Dodge Ram was moving at a high rate of speed and had crashed into them from behind. A witness who saw the crash said that after the collision, the driver fled the scene.
Traffic camera video shows a dark red pickup truck moving with a need for speed when it suddenly strikes what appears to be a white convertible from behind. The white convertible was hit with so much force that it was pushed through the red light.
It didn’t stop there. The driver, who was identified as NS, was then seen crashing into another vehicle and fleeing the scene again.
After that crash, S, 40, lost control of his vehicle and drove into a batch of shrubs and trees. Deputies say S then abandoned the vehicle and tried to flee the scene by running into a wooded area.
Video shows a red pickup truck seen coming to a final rest in the bushes, and deputies surrounding the shrubs as they look for the suspect.
“You’re in there, you’re going to get bit,” a Lee County deputy can be heard saying in the video. The video continues to show the man lying in a patch of shrubs before he is handcuffed and walked to a patrol vehicle.
When deputies made contact with S, he showed signs of impairment, including bloodshot eyes and a strong odor of alcohol.
He was booked on counts of DUI with property damage, DUI and hit-and-run.
