Armed man shot by law enforcement during Altamonte Springs altercation

An Altamonte Springs police officer and Seminole County deputy shot a man after he brandished a handgun on Christmas Day morning.

The Altamonte Springs Police Department received a call at about 10:43 a.m. in the 700 block of Florida Boulevard.

The caller told police her husband, S S, had behaved suspiciously the night before and requested to be escorted inside the home to pick up Christmas gifts.

Police requested the family to leave the home after discovering S was locked inside a bedroom.

Officers said they tried persuading Scherer to come outside. However, S broke through a window while holding a handgun.

He then began moving toward other family members who were standing outside, according to police.

Police said they used loud commands to urge S to drop the weapon, and a police officer deployed his Taser to de-escalate the situation.

Despite that, police said S ignored the commands and turned toward his wife while raising the gun.

According to police, an officer and deputy with the Seminole County Sheriff’s Office discharged their weapons in response.

S was transported to a local hospital for treatment of his injuries, police said.

He is now facing the charge of aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer, according to police.

The officer involved in the shooting was placed on administrative while the incident is being investigation.
