PINELLAS COUNTY, Fla. — An 86-year-old man is dead and his son has been arrested after authorities said he ran him over multiple times with a truck at a Treasure Island bar.

Mark McKeown, 61, is facing charges in the death of his father, Thomas McKeown.

According to the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office, the younger McKeown backed his pickup truck into a parking space at “R-Bar” around 8:30 p.m. on Saturday night.

His father reportedly walked toward the truck, then fell down in front of it.

That’s when authorities say Mark McKeown ran him over, dragging him through the parking lot before backing up and running over him repeatedly before leaving the scene.

A worker at a nearby business said this kind of crime is unusual for Treasure Island.

“There’s not a whole lot of violence on the beach, at least to that degree,” said Christopher Walker, who works at the Floridian Cuban Sandwich shop. “You hear about some fights, some fisticuffs stuff, occasionally.”

The sheriff’s office says impairment appears to be a factor in the crash.

Mark McKeown has been charged with leaving the scene of a crash involving death.
