An Aventura man is facing five criminal charges after police said he attacked a construction crew who had been on his balcony as they worked at his condominium building, leaving one worker bloodied after hitting him with a helmet.
Police said they were sent to the Turnberry Towers, located at 19355 Turnberry Way, just after 9:30 p.m. on Wednesday after resident MM assaulted the workers.
Officers said a “very erratic” M, 56, told them “there were people on his balcony and he (had) no idea who they were and wanted to know what they wanted.”
According to an arrest report, one of the workers said he saw M’s balcony door open and his foreman told him to close it for safety reasons, saying that M had been sent multiple emails about the construction work and had been warned about opening his balcony door.
Authorities said M began yelling at the workers and slapped one of them in the face as he tried to explain why they were there. Police said M then picked up a construction helmet and “threw it at him as hard as he could.”
The helmet hit the worker in the side of his head, then bounced off and hit another worker in the face, causing that worker to bleed and possibly suffer a broken nose, according to the report.
Authorities said as the workers began rappelling down from the seventh floor “in fear,” M “threw a power drill at them, which landed on a temporary roof above the second floor.”
According to police, M admitted to slapping a worker and throwing a helmet but said he “couldn’t recall” if he threw the drill. They said he admitted to knowing that work was being done on the building.
Police arrested the Italian national on two aggravated battery charges and individual charges of shooting or throwing a deadly missile, battery and criminal mischief.
M’s bond was listed as “to be set” in Miami-Dade jail records as of Thursday afternoon.
