OCALA, Fla. (WCJB) – Marion County Sheriff’s deputies arrested a babysitter accused of harming a baby, as they continue to investigate possible additional victims.
Viviana Harumi Ortiz-Lopez, 30, was arrested on Tuesday on charges of felony child abuse after a baby girl in her care was taken to the hospital with a bruised face.
The parents told detectives that they picked up the baby from their babysitter, Ortiz-Lopez, after she called and told them the child wouldn’t stop crying.
The parents noticed the baby’s face and nose were bruised. Ortiz-Lopez claimed the child caused the injuries to herself.
The girl was taken to the hospital for evaluation. Doctors and a medical professional from the Kimberly Center, a domestic abuse treatment center, agreed that the baby couldn’t have injured herself. A detective noted the bruising appeared similar in size and shape to an adult-sized hand.
The victim’s parents told deputies Ortiz-Lopez was recommended to them by babysitting services. Ortiz-Lopez said she regularly babysits children from families in the area.
