Bicyclist dies in hit-and-run in Lehigh Acres

Troopers from the Florida Highway Patrol and deputies from the Lee County Sheriff’s Office swarmed a road in Lehigh Acres to investigate a deadly hit-and-run crash Friday morning.

The investigation is taking place along James Avenue and East Fifth Street. Authorities were called to the scene just before midnight and are working to gather new information.

The crash was originally reported as a hit-and-run crash with injuries by FHP, but was updated to “Fatality” status.

FHP confirmed that a bicyclist was traveling westbound on East 5th Street and was hit by a vehicle. The vehicle then fled the scene.

The bicyclist was transported to a local hospital and later pronounced dead.

A Gulf Coast News reporter on the scene saw a bike lying on the side of the road, its front tire mangled.

A portion of James Avenue and East Fifth Street is closed at this time. LCSO deputies located further down the street shared that they were there “for a suspect.” It is unknown at this time if the suspect is linked to the hit-and-run investigation.
