Body cam video released after boat crashes into barrier along Sanibel Causeway

A boat crashed into a barrier along the Sanibel Causeway Thursday afternoon, prompting an investigation by marine units with the Lee County Sheriff’s Office.

The Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) said it received a call that the 24-foot vessel had crashed around 3:30 p.m.

The U.S. Coast Guard confirmed one person was on the boat and was with local EMS on land. The boater was injured and sent to the hospital.

FWC said the sole occupant on the boat was 44-year-old Isreal Rogner. According to Lee Health, Rogner is listed in good condition at this time.

Captain Larry Hendricks was in the water near the Sanibel Causeway and saw the boat lodged into the rocks.

“‘How in the world?’ How in the world do you end up that far up in a parking lot?” Hendricks said. “I don’t know how hard he had to hit those rocks to launch and land. That’s remarkable.”

“Experience matters, but just be cautious. Be careful with what you do and pay attention to your surroundings; that’s the biggest thing,” Hendricks said.

As of 10:41 p.m., FWC said the boat had still not been removed and remained under the bridge.

FWC is leading the investigation. It still has not released how the crash happened.
