Body of missing Polk County student found after reported kayak incident

The body of a missing 18-year-old student who reportedly went underwater during a kayaking incident was found early Monday after an overnight search. according to the Polk County Sheriff’s Office.

“After searching throughout the night, Marine Unit deputies from the Polk County Sheriff’s Office located Aaron Tillman, deceased, at about 5:12 this morning, in an area of Lake McLeod that was about 13 feet deep,” Sheriff Grady Judd stated in a press release. “Please continue to keep his family and friends in your prayers during this incredibly difficult time.”

The office said Tillman, of Eagle Lake, was a student at Ambassadors Christian Academy of Winter Haven, and member of both the football and wrestling teams.

Deputies were sent to the lake at 3:05 p.m. Sunday along with Polk County Fire Rescue and FWC to join in the search.

“The woman told deputies that she jumped into the water from the kayak to swim, but when she resurfaced she saw Tillman in the water and struggling to stay above water. She told detectives that she did not know if he fell or intentionally got into the water,” the release stated.

The release said that the woman and nearby witnesses went into the water to help, but Tillman disappeared in the water.

The investigation remains ongoing.
