Body with ‘toes sticking out of the ground’ identified as missing Florida man: police

Days after a Florida homeowner discovered “toes sticking out of the ground” in their backyard, police have revealed that the remains belonged to a man who was reported missing last month.

The human remains were identified as 23-year-old Sabeion Dowell, the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office confirmed to WFLA on Wednesday. According to Action News Jax, Dowell had been missing since February.

The discovery came to light on the evening of March 14 when the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office arrived at a home on Sunny Acres Drive East for a report of human remains being found in the backyard.

When deputies arrived at the home, two feet were seen “sticking up out of the ground.”

The owner of the home was reportedly doing yard work when he discovered “toes sticking out of the ground,” a woman who was helping the man told News4Jax.

“We were working inside the house, and then the owner came to us and said, ‘Hey, there is something here. We have to call 911.’ I said, ‘OK.’ I was shook,” the woman, who did not want to be identified, told News4JAX.

The woman told News4Jax that the feet appeared to be black, most likely from decomposing.

“They were all black and stuff. But I guess that was from decomposing,” the woman said. “I just hope that everything gets solved. My reaction to this is just craziness. I would never expect this, especially at a house that I am working at.”

According to News4Jax, the homeowner expressed concern for the victim, stating, “I want to offer my condolences to the young person or to the person they found at my property. No family at all should have to go through that at all.”

Dowell’s family reportedly came to the home when they learned that a body had been found.

JSO is still investigating how the 23-year-old died and how he came to be buried on the property.

“This incident will be classified as pending until the Medical Examiner’s Office can complete their investigation to determine the manner of death,” the sheriff’s office said in a statement.

According to a police report, Dowell’s sisters reported him missing after his family hadn’t heard from him in days, which was “not normal behavior for her brother.”
