Both U.S. 1 and Card Sound Road crashes into Florida Keys cleared

Crashes on both the 18 Mile Stretch of U.S.1 and Card Sound Road backed up all traffic heading into the Florida Keys for hours Friday morning into the afternoon. The crash on the 18 Mile Stretch involved an overturned septic tank truck that was leaking fuel, said Detective Angel Rodriguez, a Miami-Dade County police spokesman. It crashed at mile marker 116, which is on the Miami-Dade County end of the highway. The crash on Card Sound Road happened at the south end of the Card Sound Bridge. A photo provided by the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office showed a jackknifed landscaping pickup truck with a trailer.

Both crashes happened around 10 a.m. At noon, the sheriff’s office said the southbound lanes of the Stretch were reopened, but traffic backups on U.S. 1 in Florida City and on the Turnpike heading to Florida City continued for hours. According to Miami-Dade County Fire Rescue, there were no reported injuries involved with the overturned truck on the Stretch. The Card Sound Road crash was cleared shortly after 1 p.m., Monroe County Sheriff Rick Ramsay told the Herald. The cause of both crashes is under investigation. Most traffic heading in and out of the Keys flows on the 18 Mile Stretch of U.S. 1.

Card Sound Road is the other artery, which is a two-lane highway heading southeast from Florida City on the mainland, then southwest at a three-way intersection in north Key Largo.
