Brevard County firefighters put out burning hybrid car near private school

Brevard County firefighters on Tuesday prevented a burning hybrid car from further damaging a private school near Rockledge.

Units responded to Puzzle Box Academy along U.S. 1, which sustained minor damage to the soffit but nothing significant, according to a spokesperson for the school. The building was evacuated while firefighters doused the burning car, yet students were able to return to regular classes later in the day, the spokesperson said.

The fire extended to the hybrid vehicle’s lithium-ion battery pack, resulting in a thermal runaway of the batteries, Brevard County Fire Rescue said on social media.

Crews remained on scene to keep cooling the battery pack and prevent reignition of the fire, the post states.
