BSO: Man fatally shot at gas station in Pompano Beach; 1 taken into custody

A man was shot and killed following an altercation at a gas station in Pompano Beach.

The incident occurred at the Race Trac located at 599 West Atlantic Boulevard around 5 p.m., Sunday.

Pompano Beach Fire Rescue crews located 37-year-old Brian Semil suffering from a gunshot wound. He was transported to Broward Health North where he was pronounced deceased.

According to Broward Sheriff’s Office, Semil tried to forcibly enter a vehicle that was occupied by a mother and her children. Three males intervened and prevented Semil from entering the vehicle.

At some point during this altercation, one of the three individuals discharged his weapon, striking Semil.

All three men and additional witnesses remained on the scene and cooperated with investigators.

Semil was no stranger to the law, In 2015, He was the suspect in a carjacking that led to police chase and a rough take down in a Fort Lauderdale. In this case he approached a woman and demanded her keys. For her safety, she gave up the keys and he drove away, but he was soon spotted by police, which prompted a short pursuit.

Semil appeared in court and was charged with robbery, grand theft auto, aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer, among other traffic offenses. He was later released.

Now, detectives said upon completion of their investigation, the case will be presented to the Broward County State Attorney’s Office for review.

As of Monday afternoon, one person has been detained.

No other injuries were reported.
