Car crashes into tree in front yard of a Fort Myers Shores home

On Saturday at about 1:30 a.m., Dennis Keene and his son heard a loud boom. They thought it was a lightning strike, but it ended up being somebody crashing in his yard, not even a foot away from his home on 5th Street in Fort Myers Shores.

The vehicle hit a cabbage tree. Pictures provided to NBC2 show that the driver and passenger airbags were inflated, a purse was left behind and an identification card. The people in the vehicle fled the scene before the Lee County deputies arrived.

“I don’t know whether they were on drugs, I don’t know if they were drunk, but I don’t know,” Dennis said.

This is not the first time a vehicle has ended up in his yard. Last year on Sept. 6, a vehicle caught on fire in his yard. The driver was a 33-year-old Lehigh Acres man who was rescued. The damages are still visible today.

“I am feeling extremely disgusted. I am feeling very angry,” said Christina Keene, Dennis’ daughter.

Christina says she is worried about the safety of her family, as well as her neighbors. She says people drive too fast on 5th Street, even though the speed limit is 20 mph.

“It could have been a person walking the streets, there are people out here all hours of the night walking their dogs, you could have hit another vehicle that was coming around that corner, and for you just to walk away and run like a coward it’s pretty sick,” Christina said.
