Firefighters extinguished a house fire in Ocala on Monday afternoon that claimed the life of a family pet.

Marion County and Ocala Fire Rescue crews responded to a house fire on Southeast 57th Avenue around 2:30 p.m. A 911 caller reported the fire started in the front bedroom.

When firefighters arrived, heavy smoke was pouring from the front of the home. Crews attacked the fire, bringing it under control in about 20 minutes.

No people were harmed in the fire; however, one cat perished in the blaze. The cause of the fire remains under investigation as of this report.
