A Pembroke Pines homeowner is still putting the pieces together after lightning struck his house Wednesday afternoon — a moment caught on surveillance video.
Robert Goggin says the strike hit a flagpole in his yard, sending an intense electric current across the property. The surge stripped bark from a tree and left behind charred debris.
“It’s the flagpole, it’s hit the yard, and it it’s hit the mahogany tree, like simultaneously,” said Goggin. “It’s singed and blew fixtures apart and shot them out clean out of the yard and blew the stuff all the way across the yard.”
Goggin says the incident also stirred up memories of Hurricane Andrew in 1992.
With hurricane season now at its peak, he hopes others will see the strike as a reminder to be prepared.
“It really gives you an eye awakening event to think about your friends and your family that one day you could be here and the next day you could be gone,” Goggin said. “That’s the end of it. It’s in a heartbeat. It’s in a flash just like the lightning is a flash.”
